The Basics About This Device

In 2016, Philip Morris International (PMI) introduced the original IQOS device as one of the first globally promoted Heat-Not-Burn devices. The device went over well with industry insiders and consumers, however it had some noticeable design flaws. In 2017, PMI launched the second generation of IQOS products with the IQOS 2.4 and later that same year 2.4 Plus. Upon it’s unveiling IQOS 2.4 was the industry standard. In other words, it set the bar for Heat-Not-Burn.

IQOS 2.4 and IQOS 2.4 Plus are extremely similar to the original IQOS device, however the updated versions introduced multiple design improvements, including a sturdier blade, lid locking magnetic mechanism, and the option of Bluetooth capacity. IQOS 2.4/ 2.4 Plus are not integrated devices, this means that they have a separate holder and pocket charger. Subsequently, they are not multi-use, meaning that the holder must be charged in the pocket charger after each use. IQOS 2.4/ 2.4 Plus do not offer temperature adjustment or a self-cleaning function.

The devices come in white or navy and retail for approximately $85USD.

With the launch of the IQOS 2.4 Plus line, PMI also released merchandise designed to customize and personalize IQOS devices (compatible with original IQOS, IQOS 2.4, and IQOS 2.4 Plus). Some consumers had the choice of 12 HeatStick holder cap colors. There were also several limited edition kits sold, including a matte red, matte pink, metallic blue, and motor (black and red). PMI also began to sell IQOS accessories including; leather pouches, folios (carrying case), trays, and car trays. The prices for IQOS accessories range from $12USD to $60USD (see your national IQOS website or local IQOS distributor for more information).

Difference Between IQOS 2.4 and IQOS 2.4 Plus

The only difference between IQOS 2.4 and 2.4 Plus is the option for Bluetooth. IQOS 2.4 devices do not have Bluetooth capabilities, whereas all IQOS 2.4 Plus do. PMI attempted to promote a Bluetooth feature built into all IQOS 2.4 Plus devices, however due to development delays, the feature was never widely utilized. The Bluetooth feature was originally designed to be used in conjunction with an app that would send users notifications about their device as well as locate it if misplaced.

Product Unboxing and First Use

Heat180
Heat180

In the IQOS 2.4/2.4 Plus kit you’ll find the pocket charger, holder, manual, USB cable, cleaning brush, and cleaning sticks. Promotional material, such as coupons, and a warning about the health risks associated with tobacco consumption, as required by most governments, are also sometimes included in the box. Depending on the country or origin, the packaging may not display the corresponding device color to what is located within the box. Once you’ve unboxed the kit, check the charge of your pocket charger by pressing and holding the power button. The 4 LED indicator lights on the front of the pocket charger will show you the amount of charge remaining. 4 lights lit means that there is 75%+ charge remaining, 3 lights means 75%-50% remaining, 2 lights means 50%-25% remaining, and only 1 light lit means that there is 25% or less charge remaining. If there is anything less than 4 lights lit when you press the power button, we recommend charging. To do so, insert the holder into the pocket charger. To ensure that the holder will properly charge when in the pocket charger device, it must be inserted with the IQOS logo facing forwards (towards the push-top button, not towards the open lid). Once the holder is properly inserted, close the lid and plug in the USB cable to the USB port on the bottom of the pocket charger, then plug it into a power source. Our test users found that it took approximately 2 hours to charge the device fully. When fully charged the pocket charger LED indicator lights will turn solid green.

Heat180

Once charged, you’re ready to use. Disconnect the pocket charger from the power source, remove the holder, and close the pocket charger lid. Gently insert a HeatStick into the HeatStick charging chamber, then press and hold the holder control button until the power indicator light on the holder begins blinking and the device vibrates once. Note that the blade within the 2.4/ 2.4 Plus holders are sturdier than the original IQOS device, but care should still be taken when inserting the HeatStick. The holder will heat up relatively quickly (22 seconds) at which point the power indicator light will remain solid. At this point, the device is ready for use.

One cycle lasts for 6 minutes or 14 puffs, whichever comes first. When you`re down to the last 30 seconds, the holder will give of a warning vibration and will then power off automatically .

Remove the HeatStick by pushing up the cap, then gently pulling the HeatStick straight out of the holder. Dispose of it the same way you would a traditional cigarette.

If you need another cycle, you must recharge the holder in the pocket charger. When the holder is put in the pocket charger to charge, the pocket charger LED indicator light will begin to flash. It will stop when the holder is recharged and ready to use. This will take approximately 4 minutes.

Testing – Day to Day Use

Daily use of IQOS 2.4 is a joy, the device with a package of IQOS HeatSticks fits in your pocket comfortably. The IQOS 2.4 is relatively durable, we did give it some abuse but it fared nicely in comparison to the original IQOS device which is fragile and susceptible to damage easily. Users report that the vapor is not as powerful as traditional cigarette smoke. This makes it easier to smoke in public, your home, or car or without overpowering and disrupting those around you.

One of the few complaints is the time it takes to charge the holder, as it cannot be used consecutively without recharging. Nevertheless, users were generally satisfied with product quality, maintenance, and performance.

For optimal use, the device should be cleaned regularly. The manufacturer recommends after every 20 HeatSticks. To clean your device, fully remove the cap from the holder and gently lower the cleaning brush over the HeatSticks heating chamber. Slowly rotate the cleaning brush so its bristles remove any dirt within the holder. When you feel that you’ve removed all the residue you can, raise the cleaner device directly up and replace the cap. While the IQOS 2.4 and 2.4 Plus were redesigned to have sturdier blades, ensure that you are not using excessive force so to avoid damage. When you’re done, turn the holder upside down and tap your finger on the side of it so that all the residue falls out. Your IQOS kit will also come with single-use precision cleaning sticks (Q-tip dipped in alcohol solution). These can be gently inserted into the holder in a similar manner as the cleaning device. Use them to gently wipe away an remaining residue.

The device does have some minor issues as some users have reported that the device will lock you out due to a technical malfunction. Users report that most often this happens while charging the holder within the pocket charger. The pocket charger will either keep charging after the 4 minutes it usually takes or the holder power indicator light will begin flashing red once removed from the pocket charger. Troubleshooting is relatively easy, you just have to reset the pocket charger. To do this place the holder into the pocket charger and close the lid, then hold down the power button (if you have the 2.4 Plus, hold down both the power button and the Bluetooth button) for a few seconds then release. Give the device a few moments to reset, at which time all device buttons will flash indicating that the device is ready to be used once again. You can also reset the holder separately by pressing and holding the start button for a short time. If the issues persist seek the help of your regional IQOS representatives.

Nevertheless, after testing the IQOS 2.4 and 2.4 Plus the feeling is the best product line IQOS has done, some of our staff even prefer it to the newer IQOS 3.0 and 3.0 Multi as it delivers a good hit and is efficient. Overall, we here at Heat180 love the device and would highly recommend it.

First Time Switching to the IQOS Brand

In an effort to provide the most unbiased review possible, we consulted test subjects who were asked to switch from traditional cigarettes to the IQOS device for a two week period.

One of our IQOS test subject was a 20+ year conventional tobacco smoker. Initially he reported that he did not feel as satisfied using IQOS as he did traditional cigarettes however at the end of the two weeks he was converted to this product. His feedback was that chest pain, which he had experienced throughout his years as a conventional smoker, was dramatically improved and he no longer smelled like smoke. Other users reported similar findings, and several noted that they did not have as many, nor as severe, cravings as they had with traditional cigarettes.

In discussion with an IQOS district representative we were told that the success rate for users who switch to IQOS from traditional tobacco is 80%, but only with support from the IQOS team. Support programs offered can vary based on region so for most accurate information contact your regional IQOS store or national customer service representatives. We recommend that all IQOS owners make use of the services available.

Investing in IQOS

IQOS devices are one of the most expensive Heat-not-Burn products available. IQOS kits retail between $125USD and $175USD. Accessories can range from $12USD to $60USD. The average customer can expect to spend $2500 to $3500USD per year on this product line. Below are some financial options to consider when choosing to invest in IQOS.

  • Money not an issue: Buy two IQOS 2.4 devices. Rotating your device will improve longevity and aid in convenience. At the same time PMI launched IQOS 2.4 Plus, the company also introduced single and dual charging docks for the pocket chargers. This makes it more convenient for users to charge their devices, particularly for those who use more than one device. To operate, the docks must to be connected to the USB charging cord. Once connected, the pocket charger(s) can be inserted until a small click is felt/heard. If you live in a part of the word where IQOS HeatSticks quality and taste is not to your liking, order your products from Japan. You can read more about this topic and how to do so here.
  • Money is an issue: There are devices from China that have tested extremely well. We still recommend buying your primary device from an official IQOS outlet, however you could always purchase a backup from China. Another option is to buy a used device, available on numerous online resale websites. Some new users choose not to commit to the device or find that it doesn’t fit their needs. Thus, buying used is a good idea when trying to cut costs. For HeatSticks we recommend buying IQOS HEETS for guaranteed quality, however there are compatible knockoffs from China if you so choose.

IQOS HeatSticks (HEETS) Overview

IQOS’ brand of HeatSticks is called HEETS (herein referred to as HEETS). HEETS are specifically designed for IQOS HnB products holder device. Each HEET consists of 18 milligrams of nicotine. Users report that the tobacco taste is very strong because of this. Due to such several users have commented that, despite which label, IQOS flavors have a more noticeable nicotine taste than vape flavors. There are several available flavors of HEETS – for a full listing of the flavors, reviews, more information abut the HEETS design, please click here.

Tips and Tricks

  • Philip Morris International (PMI), the IQOS manufacturer, is spending a lot of money keeping its new and existing customers happy. If you encounter any problems with your IQOS devices do not hesitate to reach out to them by calling their customer service support line. The phone number, corresponding to country of purchase, is located on the side of the box. There is no guaranteed course of action, however the company does prize customer satisfaction. They did replace one of our products for free, which amazed us as it was a broken blade in an older device without a receipt. They simply scanted the barcode and give us a brand new device. I would not expect this to happen all the time but it is worth bring up.
  • In some countries PMI offers free cleaning of the product by simply visiting an official IQOS store.
  • At some point tobacco residue will build up on the bottom of the heater blade. At this point, the device must be cleaned. Do not clean the device with any tool other than the cleaning tools included in the IQOS kit as the blade is fragile and could break if not handled properly. Two cleaning tools will be included in the IQOS kit: the cleaning brush and cleaning sticks/cleaning hooks. The brush can be used to sweep away small pieces of residue from the HeatSticks holder. The cleaning hook is used to push out stuck tobacco from the cap, not to clean near the blade. * If you like using this device it is worth keeping your eye open on Ali Express’s website for new and interesting devices. Just remember, it is from China, delivery can be slow, read the reviews before buying, make sure you check the release date of the device.
  • While consumers can purchase each IQOS component separately from IQOS retailers, it is more financially beneficial to purchase the kit, which includes all necessary components and user instructions.
